I thought I blogged about this last year, but apparently I was wrong (isn’t the first time and won’t be the last time, I imagine). Fellow EduBlogger, Karl Fisch, author of the “Shift Happens” video we watched last year, wrote a post about how the Free Rice website has expanded to include more subjects. The subjects now include:

ART – Famous Paintings
CHEMISTRY – Chemical Symbols (Basic), Chemical Symbols (Full List)
ENGLISH – English Grammar, English Vocabulary
GEOGRAPHY – Identify Countries on the Map, World Capitals
LANGUAGE LEARNING – French, German, Italian, Spanish
MATH – Basic Math (Pre-Algebra), Multiplication Table

How the game works (in a nutshell):

  • You answer questions
  • For every question answered correctly, sponsors of the website donate enough money to buy 20 grains of rice
  • This rice is given to poor people in third world countries

Here is the full description from the FreeRice FAQ:

FreeRice has a custom database containing knowledge questions at varying levels of difficulty. There are levels appropriate for beginners and levels that will challenge the most scholarly professors. In between are levels suitable for students of all ages, business people, homemakers, doctors, truck drivers, retired people… everyone!

FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level. It starts by giving you questions of increasing difficulty and then, based on how you do, assigns you an approximate starting level. You then determine a more exact level for yourself as you play. When you get a question wrong, you go to an easier level. When you get three questions in a row right, you go to a harder level. This one-to-three ratio is best for keeping you at the “outer fringe” of your skills, where learning can take place.

So, have some free time? Watch your donated bowl of rice “grow!” Click HERE to play!

Another great charity site is AIDtoCHILDREN.com. It donates money to children in need through World Vision.

    Check it out at http://www.aidtochildren.com
